From the desk of Robert Libka, PTHS 209 Superintendent

Dear PTHS 209 family & friends,

April is state test month and brings an end to Fiscal Year 2008. During the past year, we launched a number of new learning initiatives that focus on improving test scores as well as contributing generally to the quality of the overall liberal arts education we provide.

According to early progress reports, students' scores on Work Keys Reading assessments have improved significantly. We have also seen marked student advancement in the core academic areas of math, reading, science and social studies as part of our preparation for the State of Illinois Prairie State Achievement Exam (PSAE).

The future holds great promise for Proviso students. I look forward to celebrating the achievements that keep "Proviso Rising".

Many of you know that I am transitioning out of my role as superintendent, which I initially took on an interim basis.

During my professional career as an educator, I have enjoyed my time with PTHS 209. PTHS 209 Superintendent is a challenging position, to be sure, but that is part of the attractiveness of the job. This is a district in which passionate educators can truly make a difference in the intellectual development of their students.

PTHS 209 is fortunate to have a plethora of just these type of educators (teachers, administrators, and staff) who possess great talent for connecting with our children and bringing the best out of them.

I am thankful for the support I received during my time as Superintendent. I am proud of the progress we have made in a short amount of time and the course upon which we have set PTHS 209 for current and future generations of students-providing that quality education so necessary in our digital, global economy for each and every PTHS 209 student.

I am also proud of the efforts we have made to better involve PTHS 209 parents. We recognize that a student's home environment is critical to their academic success. And we will continue to outreach to PTHS 209 families to encourage their involvement in their child's academic life and extracurricular activities.

Thank you again for providing me with this opportunity to serve the PTHS 209 community. I look forward to finishing out my term and assisting in the transition process so as to keep "Proviso Rising" without interruption.

    Sincerely,

    Bob Libka
    Superintendent, PTHS 209

PMSA one of 3000 schools awarded a "We the People 'Created Equal' Bookshelf"

The Proviso Mathematics and Science Academy Learning Resource Center was one of 3000 recently selected to receive a "We the People 'Created Equal' Bookshelf" by the National Endowment for the Humanities. The bookshelf is a collection of books and resources for K-12 that will be added to the PMSA's permanent collection. Some of the titles will also be available in Spanish as well. This will complement the Picturing America collection that PMSA received in January from NEH that is currently on display in showcases on the 1st floor, as well as in the windows in the LRC on the 3rd floor.

Proviso West's Naval JROTC Unit Passes Annual Military Inspection

The most important event in an Naval JROTC unit's year is the Annual Military Inspection. This year, the Inspecting Officer for Proviso West's NJROTC Unit was CDR George Clifford, Area Manager, NJROTC Area Three. CDR Clifford personally inspected each of the 286 cadets in the unit.

After the inspection was complete, the Pass in Review ceremony was held with music provided by the Navy Band Great Lakes. The hour-long event included military drill performances, awards for "Voice of Democracy" speeches from the Bellwood VFW post, medals for leadership and scholastic excellence from the Berkley American Legion Post, and promotions to cadet Chief Petty Officer.

Joining CDR Clifford on the podium were Mrs. Wallace, Principal; Mayor Frank Pasquale and Village Clerk Lena Moreland of Bellwood, and PTHS 209 Board member Sue Henry. Last year the unit earned the highest possible honor in the NJROTC program, Distinguished Unit with Academic Honors. Over 90% of last year's seniors were accepted to 2- or 4-year colleges.

The most important social event for the NJROTC unit is the Military Ball, which will take place April 18, 2008 at Ashton Place Banquets in Willowbrook. Proviso West's Military Ball is a formal event; over 250 guests will participate in military pomp and circumstance, followed by dining and dancing.

    Quote of the Week:

In a completely rational society, the best of us would aspire to be teachers and the rest of us would have to settle for something less, because passing civilization along from one generation to the next ought to be the highest honor and the highest responsibility anyone could have.
