You won't for the next 12-18 hours, maybe 24. We have about 9 inches on the ground, and the worst snow fall just started a hour ago. With steady 30 MPH plus winds, there's no point in plowing. We blew out our sidewalk at 6:30 p.m. and there's a 2 1/2 foot drift on it now.

Got that right, DM.  That was perhaps the worst part of my trip home.  I just finished plowing it just to get into my garage.  Took about 45 min from Arlington Heights, and another 10-14 to get into the garage.  I have about an 8-12" rise.

i have no idea what strategy PW will use to move all this snow. try and keep up w/it or wait til it's done?
seems all private efforts last night were for naught.
maybe an email from VH letting us know the plan so we call all work, somewhat efficiently, toward the same goal/timeline?

Yes, one of the village's robo calls or an email blast would be helpful.

I don't think the plows have been down my street in ages. Where do you think they are plowing? Madison? Circle?

Does our village do Harlem and Roosevelt or is that IDOT?

Saw someone snowshoeing down the street earlier this morning. He was making good time too.

Part of my back yard this morning.

It's crazy out there!

Round one of shoveling out was a success. ~100' of three foot drifts have been repositioned off the side and back walkways. Back stairs and porch cleared. Another 50' and the cars will be reached!

As if to laugh at my puny efforts, it's started snowing again.

I'd say this will be a four-round fight... at least. But dem snowflakes are going DOWN!

On the bright side, it's a light snow that's not too taxing. Great for snow-angels; not so good for snowmen or snowball fights.

It's very still and pretty outside. Only the faint rumble of snow-blowers breaks the quiet.

Round two... coming up!

that's the spirit! watcher. so you're taking the 'keep up w/it' route.

pie, not sure. i'm wondering if PW is focusing on our main streets for now. watching them all last night...wondering if they threw in the towel (to mother nature).
saw gillian early this morning in a little jeep w/plow and flashing lights so wondering if VH got much sleep last night. (assume it was gillian - at his own house.)

Round Two:

Almost to the cars! Driftier than Round One. Like shoveling through a Meringue Pie in Land of the Giants. Still very quiet and peaceful out there. Random shouts and distant children at play. Nice.

How's everyone else faring?

When I break through, I'll likely be available for the highest bidder!<g>

i'm doing nothing as my coach house tenant reports my snow shovel just broke in half. they're trying to dig out their car/the alley.
but i spotted an orange handle (barely) sticking out of a snow drift - in my neighbor's yard. yep, 2 snow shovels.
we're gonna use now and apologize later :)

Trying to motivate to go outside. Seeing some of the neighbors out with shovels and snowthrowers. If I make it to the garage, I'm strapping on the snowshoes and perhaps taking a walk!

Good luck and bend at the knees; don't want to hurt your back.

Oh!  He looks so cozy, Piehead!

I'm downtown and it rules.  I can only see like 5 people on Michigan at any given time.  The train was never more quiet.  Fiancee was forced to WFH, which means he did the first round of shoveling, though there will be some to look forward to when I get home.

@ Dunlop Man - YES!  But it's not like the end of the world or anything.  Power is not out at work or at home.  Trains are running.

Nobody said the world was ending, #6. Just coming to a sudden stop for a while.

Btw, there's been a death or two, including a man blown into Lake Michigan. This is serious business; that's what all the dire warnings were about. Better safe than sorry.

Where this stands historically so far:

1. 23.0 inches on Jan. 26-27, 1967
2. 21.6 inches on Jan .1-3, 1999
3. 20.2 inches on Feb. 1-2, 2011 (and counting- totals from O'Hare and Midway)
4. 19.2 inches on March 25-26, 1930
5. 18.8 inches on Jan. 13-14, 1979

While we don't know the circumstances that put a man within blowing distance of the lake during a blizzard, it's probably safe to nominate him for a Darwin Award.

OTOH, 7-11 and Wal-Mart are OPEN!

Roosevelt looks okay, DesPlaines is passable, but SFAICS, If you don't have a plow on the front of your vehicle, the alleys aren't navigable in any but the ruggedest of 4/AWD tanks.

Once the plows make a pass down the alleys, there will be much digging out again.

On the bright side, once you get your vehicle to a main road, traffic is very light.

I am going out for round 3ish. Citizen, you are welcome to my snowblower if necessary. I have the most wonderful next door neighbor, he always does my front while he's doing his. He did it at 6:30 this morning, so it needs it again. I'll probably do him and another few neighbors. Stop by everyone, for Hot Toddy's! What's gonna break me is the side and parking areas as they have really drifted up. Good Luck to all, stay warm!!

They plow your alleys?  Awesome!

I did the short half of my alley when I got home last night (one car wide), and again when I left for work again this morning.

Done with 2 rounds of shoveling. First one to the alley. Second one, the gangway and the front steps.

Next will be to get a path to the street (which was just plowed). Except for the numnut that parked on the street. Always one.gangway almost done
to the other side of the gate...that was quite a trick to shovel from the other side of the gate!
front steps?

Thanks to the storm my youngest girl is stranded out on the west coast. Trains aren't going east of Albuquerque for the next 2 days. So she's going to be stuck in LaLa Land or New Mexico until we can figure out if we should try to get her on a plane or wait for the railways to open.

But all in all, everyone here seems to be making the best of it. It's pretty cool seeing all the folks walking up & down the streets. And my dog is having a ball running through the drifts.

Saw someone snowshoeing early this morning.

Have seen many cold weather doggies out having fun...St. Bernard, 2 big Huskies (or Malmutes), Labs, lots and lots of pooches.

Coolest sight today- a guy walking s/b on Dunlop pulling a kids plastic sled loaded with several three gallon gas containers.

Got home late Tuesday night almost out of gas, and couldn't get out of his garage.

And all I have to say is, thank God for snow blowers. It was tough enough shoveling off the front and back porches and steps.

The 3-foot plus high, 20 foot by seven foot drift in front of our garage door would still be there if not for Toro.

Did my 32' of alley frontage with a shovel! Although now my parking pad/bay next to the garage is 8' tall with snow. No cars will be parking in there til summer. I put a lot of snow in it! I got quite the workout today.

part I of garage shoveling
parking pad after part I of garage shoveling

My neighbor was out with his snowthrower trying to get a path to the corner so he could get his truck out.

Just got the 411 from my neighbors. Apparently Hosty's alley was cleared this morning and a couple people passing by Calderone's allege he had a truck and people from Dist 91 clearing his drive. Fortunately for the Mayor these folks were not camera phone people.
