the PD//gillian has asked me to put my vehicle 'inside, if possible.' ah, the punchlines just write themselves. LOL
and the national weather service calls our snow situation 'dire,' which i hope is melodramatic.

No melodrama. Just drama.

This is the real deal. Maybe not '67 (hopefully) but if you look at the weather patterns (arctic jet stream dipping way low to the gulf, then back up in an arc to the Great Lakes) you see just what it looked like on Jan. 25, 1967- massive quantities of gulf moisture being pulled into an arctic stream and dumped on our heads, and back again by high winds. Followed the next day by dropping temps.

Stay inside if you can folks. Gonna get nasty.

This time it will be different. The snow will be blackish and greasy from all that BP oil spilled in the gulf. The upside is, it will be great packing for snowball fights.

My office is closing at noon (and in almost 36 years, this is a first); and tomorrow we're still open (as of now). We have a hotline number to call or we need to check emails.

We're going to play it by ear, though we have only 3 employees total (one of which works from home).  My main man works at Northwestern, though, and his Dept. is sending people home at 2pm.

I gotta see this storm to believe it.  Right now I think it's just media hype.  C'mon, now.  We are a winter city.  Infrastructure better not break down because of some snow.

Media hype huh...

This from those overwrought media types at the National Weather Service:

1126 AM CST TUE FEB 1 2011

...BLIZZARD WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 3 PM THIS AFTERNOON TO
3 PM CST WEDNESDAY...

A BLIZZARD WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 3 PM THIS AFTERNOON TO
3 PM CST WEDNESDAY.

* TIMING...ACCUMULATING SNOW WILL DEVELOP AROUND THE INTERSTATE
80 CORRIDOR DURING THE EARLY TO MID AFTERNOON...SPREADING
NORTH TO THE WISCONSIN STATE LINE BY MID TO LATE AFTERNOON.
THE MOST SIGNIFICANT SNOW MAY COME IN A COUPLE OF WAVES...WITH
THE FIRST WAVE LATE THIS AFTERNOON INTO EARLY THIS EVENING...
FOLLOWED BY A SECOND WAVE OF INTENSE SNOW LATER THIS EVENING
INTO THE OVERNIGHT. ACCUMULATING LAKE EFFECT SNOW SHOWERS WILL
CONTINUE OVER NORTHEAST ILLINOIS WEDNESDAY MORNING...SPREADING
  INTO NORTHWEST INDIANA WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON.

* ACCUMULATIONS...SNOW WILL BE HEAVY AT TIMES WITH ACCUMULATION
RATES LIKELY REACHING OR EXCEEDING 1 TO 2 INCHES PER HOUR. STORM
TOTAL SNOWFALL OF 10 TO 18 INCHES IS LIKELY TOWARD ROCKFORD AND
DIXON. THE HEAVIEST SNOWFALL TOTALS ARE LIKELY DOWNWIND OF LAKE
MICHIGAN IN THE CHICAGO METROPOLITAN AREA INTO NORTHWEST INDIANA
WHERE 12 TO 20 INCHES OF SNOW IS LIKELY...WITH POSSIBLE
LOCALIZED TOTALS UP TO TWO FEET.

* WINDS...NORTHEAST WINDS WILL INCREASE TO 20 TO 35 MPH BY LATE
THIS AFTERNOON. WIND GUSTS UP TO 40 MPH WILL BE POSSIBLE BY
EVENING WITH GUSTS OF 40 TO 50 MPH LIKELY TONIGHT. EVEN
STRONGER WINDS ARE LIKELY NEAR THE IMMEDIATE LAKE SHORE WITH
SUSTAINED WINDS OF 30 TO 40 MPH WITH GUSTS BETWEEN 50 AND 60
  MPH.

* BLIZZARD CONDITIONS...THE STRONG WINDS ALONG WITH BLOWING AND
OCCASIONALLY HEAVY FALLING SNOW WILL REDUCE VISIBILITIES TO
  NEAR ZERO AT TIMES.

* THUNDERSTORMS...ISOLATED SNOW-PRODUCING THUNDERSTORMS ARE
EXPECTED TO DEVELOP TONIGHT...RESULTING IN LOCALIZED INTENSE
SNOWFALL RATES. IT IS NOT UNCOMMON FOR SNOWFALL RATES TO EXCEED
4 INCHES PER HOUR IN THUNDER SNOW MAKING TRAVEL NEARLY
  IMPOSSIBLE.

* TRAVEL...ROAD CONDITIONS WILL RAPIDLY DETERIORATE DURING THE MID
TO LATE AFTERNOON AS SNOW DEVELOPS FROM SOUTH TO NORTH ACROSS
THE AREA. TRAVEL IS EXPECTED TO BECOME TREACHEROUS BY LATE
AFTERNOON...AND DOWNRIGHT DANGEROUS BY EARLY EVENING AS WINDS
INCREASE RESULTING IN WHITE OUT CONDITIONS. SNOWFALL RATES WILL
BE SO INTENSE AT TIMES THAT ROAD CREWS MAY BE UNABLE TO KEEP PRIMARY
ROADS AND HIGHWAYS CLEARED. UNNECESSARY TRAVEL SHOULD BE AVOIDED
AT ALL COSTS THIS AFTERNOON THROUGH EARLY WEDNESDAY MORNING AS
MORE THAN HALF OF THE FATALITIES IN PREVIOUS ILLINOIS BLIZZARDS
HAVE OCCURRED AS A RESULT OF TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS. BEFORE MAKING
THE DECISION TO TRAVEL...CONSIDER IF GETTING TO YOUR DESTINATION
IS WORTH PUTTING YOUR LIFE AT RISK.

* POWER OUTAGES...THE COMBINATION OF STRONG AND GUSTY WINDS
ALONG WITH POSSIBLY HEAVY WET SNOW STICKING TO POWER LINES
COULD RESULT IN POWER OUTAGES. DUE TO THE PROLONGED NATURE OF
VERY ADVERSE CONDITIONS...PLAN ACCORDINGLY FOR THE POSSIBILITY
OF A PROLONGED DISRUPTION IN COMMERCIAL POWER.

* OTHER IMPACTS...THE HEAVY NATURE OF THE SNOW WILL MAKE
SHOVELING VERY DIFFICULT...AND POTENTIALLY DEADLY. DURING AND
IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING THE BLIZZARD OF 1999 OVER 40 PEOPLE IN
THE CHICAGO AREA ALONE LOST THEIR LIVES TO HEART ATTACKS WHILE
SHOVELING THE HEAVY SNOWFALL. TAKE FREQUENT BREAKS INDOORS AND
DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THE TASK AT HAND WHEN SHOVELING.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A BLIZZARD WARNING MEANS SEVERE WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE
EXPECTED OR OCCURRING. FALLING AND BLOWING SNOW WITH STRONG WINDS
AND POOR VISIBILITIES ARE LIKELY. THIS WILL LEAD TO WHITEOUT
CONDITIONS...MAKING TRAVEL EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. DO NOT TRAVEL! IF
YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST TRAVEL...HAVE A WINTER SURVIVAL KIT WITH YOU.
IF YOU GET STRANDED...STAY WITH YOUR VEHICLE.

Btw,

Com Ed and those hyped news outlets are both saying the snow is expected to be DRY, so the NWS's warning regarding "THE COMBINATION OF STRONG AND GUSTY WINDS, ALONG WITH POSSIBLY HEAVY WET SNOW STICKING TO POWER LINES COULD RESULT IN POWER OUTAGES" most likely won't happen.

Thank God for small favors.

More media hyperbole:

"(Residents) should brace themselves. We’re all used to inclement weather, but this one will be a storm of historical proportions.”

No. Wait. That was Jose Santiago, executive director of the city’s Office of Emergency Management.

Just got a robo call from ComEd telling me they can't read meters because of the extreme weather. Therefore, I need to read it myself and enter the numbers on their site to not receive an estimated bill.

Nothing's sticking - it's all blowing sideways.  The cars in my parking lot still need no brushing, and there's little on the rooftops .

The traffic maps don't show anything too, too bad.  I've seen worse in bad rainstorms.
Everyone left early today, and no one is working tomorrow (except me, cause I'm such a great American).  Truthfully being this close to the highway and working just as close makes it possible...as long as I can make it out of my alley tomorrow. ;-)

The sky is falling! The sky is falling!
- Watcher

I was tempted to change the subject and ask if you were talking about the newly arrived property tax bills.
But I'll stay on subject and agree with you. It's falling alright, in trillions and trillions of tiny pieces.

Nothing's sticking - it's all blowing sideways.  The cars in my parking lot still need no brushing, and there's little on the rooftops.
- Arne Harris

Well, s**te, Arne. There's over half a foot on the ground as I write this , you can't see a block away and tomorrow, when there's 18 inches and 5-foot plus drifts, I doubt you'll much care if you don't have to brush your car roof off. You'll be too busy digging your car out. Unless you have a garage, in which case you'll be busy clearing out your apron all morning.

Btw, if the village is really plowing sidewalks tonight, that shoes how clueless they are. The wind is just blowing it- as Arne pointed out- right back onto the sidewalk.

Ha-ha-ha. The snow hasn't stopped yet. But it's good to know that they're out there practicing.

my 'snow service' just cleared the sidewalks but i think they wasted their time. and their big new pick-up was struggling for about 5 minutes to get down marengo and then adams. oy.

now there's a big black caddie - very uncertain as to how to proceed. keeps going back and forth on marengo - like a running start(?) to move to the next block. oops, he's very stuck on adams now.
another pickup just did a running start and made it thru on adams.
i love my corner :)
