Last week federal Judge James Zagel ordered Forest Park Officers Keeling and Grimes to pay Jose Santana $50,000 for violating his civil rights, along with $7,000.98 in costs incurred by Santana. Document copies coming soon.

The jury also awarded punitive damages of $48,500 for pain and suffering and $1,500 for medical bills. The village's attorneys are asking the judge to amend that or, in lieu of that, order a new trial. Those motions will be argued in May. So in the meantime, cha-ching, cha-ching go the lawyers billing hours.

No word on the legal fees for this, but I'm sure Calderone administration, with its emphasis on transparency and openness, will post the figures on the village website sometime in this decade.

Wonder if Moody's has seen the long and ever expanding list of civil rights law suits the village has paid hundred's of thousands- millions?- for during Calderone's inept watches as police commissioner.

Eleven police civil rights lawsuits settled in plaintiff's favor since 2000. Five more federal lawsuits settled, including two suits by three or four police officers for the village violating their civil rights, and a former village board member for the village violating her email privacy rights.

With the settlement amounts for eight suits currently unknown, there are at least $487,000 in settlement costs.

That doesn't include the cost of defending the 16 suits.

In addition there's Dan Harder's successful lawsuit settlement for being fired, as well as the cost of the well over year long prosecution of Harder before the Fire and Police Commission.

And let's not forget the expensive witch hunt leveled at Lt. Steve Johnson.

Add 'em up, folks.

Here's the civil rights lawsuits filed against Cicero PD- the CICERO POLICE- between 2000 and present. Nine in all, though my search was not exhaustive. Of the nine, six were dismissed, one settled and two are pending.
So, CICERO, an historically corrupt town of 80,000 people- well over five times the size of Forest Park- has had nearly half the total lawsuits Forest Park has had since 2000, and only one was settled in the defendant's favor. Does that help put things here in perspective?

Let's put that on the Welcome to Forest Park signs- "Forest Park; far worse than Cicero."

Ain't that just great.

1:01-cv-00559 Mendez v. Cicero, Twn of, et al; 01/26/01-12/28/04; Dismissed - upheld on appeal

Could be, but that doesn't explain the fewer number of cases filed

My mistake. I left off a settlement.

Roosevelt Johnson sued for $200,000. The village settled with him as well.

Let's update those settlements with figures the village is releasing in dribs and drabs. And redacting whenever possible.

The figures on the cost to the village in legal defense fees still haven't been released, and the Risk Management form detailing the village's deductible and all deductible payments were blacked out. But the incomplete total still rose another $639,000.  New settlement amounts are in in red.

That's a total of $1.116 million and counting, excluding legal fees, including:
• $525,000 in two civil rights suits filed by severa Forest Park officers against their department
• $446,000 just in settlement costs for seven civil rights suits filed against police by civilians.
• $145,000 for Robert Marani and Theresa Steinbach.

It doesn't include three 2000 suits, or a 2009 suit settled last year, or the legal fees for those cases.
