I'm moved to wax nostalgic.

To a simpler, more genteel time in Forest Park, when we had two mayors.
One held court in the basement of the village hall, the other in any number of Madison's "choir lofts". If there was a piano and a martini, you could bet you'd run into the man.

When he attempted to combine the two positions, his campaign slogan was "The next best thing to being Mayor yourself". He was the toastmaster of the old guard, as likely to break into song as a ribald joke. His double entendres were wry and witty. His O-O-L columns in the Forest Park Review were widely read and quoted. He was Bob Haeger and I like to think he's warming up to sing tomorrow.

I will let others provide their own memories, anecdotes and hand-me-down lore. For now I'm reminded of a afternooneveningnight in the Park Lounge when Bob and I discussed many topics between the greetings, waves, handshakes and kisses he got as people came and went with their Lee Choi. We didn't see eye to eye on many things and both of us liked to argue, so it was a good night. I came to understand many things I had previously attributed to the Martinis. The man had a love for this town that few could match. It was all beautiful to him; Even, (especially?), the blemishes and imperfections. When it came down to what was best about Forest Park, he told me a few stories of lean times, of war times and then pulled this pearl up. "Forest Park was small enough to save and always worth saving".

Sleep well.

When the Review was the Review.  Used to pick up my route out of the alley on Madison St.  People REALLY liked Bob too.  Because, I think he was honest and forthright.
