Chris Welch like to tout his legal acumen. “Super lawyer” and all that.

His bio on his LinkedIn website and his law firm’s website, as well as a 2009 post on his defamatory Proviso Insider website all note that in 2008, Welch “led the successful defense” of a civil rights case “involving 12 Town of Cicero police officers in which six of them were found completely not guilty.”

He seems rather proud of that case. So let’s take a closer look at some of the facts.

Duran, et al v. Cicero, Twn of, et al (1:01-cv-06858) involved 17 Cicero officers, and seven were found liable, not “guilty” or “not guilty.”

Welch knows, or at least should know, since he graduated law school, that a civil jury or judge never finds a defendant guilty or not guilty. They can only find for or against plaintiffs and defendants.

Maybe Welch was confused about the difference between criminal and civil trials.

Whatever, when noted lawyer Joe “The Shark” Lopez, David Cerda and others were done, the jury found “for” 22 of the 78 plaintiffs, and against seven Cicero police officers and the Town of Cicero. Those 22 plaintiffs were awarded a total of $2,152,500.00.

I guess in some circles that’s something to crow about. I don’t move in those circles, though, and I’d say Cicero got pasted.

Finally, the civil case took seven and half years to reach a verdict. And it wasn’t until July 26, 2007 that Welch made an appearance, if federal court records are accurate. That would be nearly six years after the case was filed on Aug. 31, 2001.

There were at least three law firms involved in the defense, and a total of 11 attorneys. Correct me if I’m wrong, but why do I have a hard time believing Welch “led” anything here?
